Nepal's two great lowland parks compared — access, wildlife, crowds, activities and the best season — so you can choose the right safari, or combine both.

Nepal's subtropical lowlands, the Terai, hold two outstanding national parks. Chitwan is the famous, accessible one; Bardia is the wild, remote one. Both protect one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers, wild elephants and hundreds of bird species.

Choose Chitwan if…

  • It is your first safari in Nepal or you are short of time.
  • You are travelling with children — the canoe rides and Elephant Breeding Centre are a hit.
  • You'd like to combine wildlife with Lumbini and the Kathmandu Valley, as on our Sacred Triangle tour.

Choose Bardia if…

  • You want a wilder, less crowded experience.
  • Tracking tigers on foot with a naturalist is high on your list.
  • You have already been to Chitwan and want something different.

When to go

October to March is the most comfortable time, with warm days and cool nights. Visibility often improves from around February, after the tall grasses are cut. April and May are very hot but can be excellent for sightings as animals come to water. During the monsoon (June to September) heavy rain and flooding can close parts of the parks.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bardia better than Chitwan for tigers?

Bardia is known for good tiger-tracking opportunities and far fewer visitors, but tigers are elusive in both parks and sightings are never guaranteed.

Can I visit Chitwan with children?

Yes. Chitwan is easy to reach and has gentle activities such as canoe rides and the Elephant Breeding Centre that children enjoy.
