The Kathmandu Valley packs seven UNESCO-listed monument zones, forested hills and old Newar towns into a small area, so you can see a lot without long journeys. These are the day trips we recommend most to guests staying with us in Budhanilkantha.

1. Bhaktapur

The valley's best-preserved medieval city: Durbar Square, the five-storey Nyatapola temple, Pottery Square and juju dhau (king curd). Plan a full day; foreign visitors buy a heritage-zone ticket at the entrance.

2. Patan (Lalitpur)

Patan's Durbar Square is a masterpiece of Newar architecture, and the Patan Museum is the best introduction to the valley's art. Bhaktapur and Patan are often combined in one long day.

3. Nagarkot

A hill village on the eastern valley rim, roughly 30 km from Kathmandu, with broad Himalayan views on clear mornings. It's better as an overnight trip if you want sunrise.

4. Changu Narayan

One of the oldest temples in the valley and one of its seven UNESCO monument zones, on a ridge north of Bhaktapur. Many visitors walk down to it from Nagarkot.

5. Shivapuri hikes from Budhanilkantha

No transport needed: trails from the edge of Budhanilkantha climb into Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to Nagi Gompa, Baghdwar and Shivapuri Peak. Pay the park entry fee at the gate.

6. Kopan Monastery and Boudhanath

Combine a morning at Kopan, known for its Buddhist meditation courses, with an afternoon walking the kora around Boudhanath Stupa.

7. Kirtipur

A hilltop Newar town on the south-west side of the valley with old temples, lanes and views back over Kathmandu — far quieter than the city centre.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Kathmandu?

Bhaktapur is the favourite for most first-time visitors — a full day of medieval squares, temples, potters and food.

Can I do day trips without a guide?

Yes, but a driver saves a lot of time in traffic, and a guide explains what you're seeing. We can arrange either.
