Reclining Vishnu statue on coiled serpents at Budhanilkantha Temple

Budhanilkantha, in the far north of the Kathmandu Valley, is best known for one extraordinary temple and for the forested Shivapuri hills that rise behind it. Here is what we tell guests to see and do — most of it within walking distance or a short ride of our homestay.

1. Budhanilkantha Temple — the Sleeping Vishnu

The area takes its name from this temple, where a reclining image of Vishnu — about five metres long and carved from a single block of black stone — lies on a bed of coiled serpents in a sacred pond. It is an active place of worship, busiest in the mornings and on festival days, so dress modestly and move quietly around worshippers.

2. Hike to Nagi Gompa

A forest trail climbs from the edge of Budhanilkantha into Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to Nagi Gompa, a Buddhist nunnery and retreat centre with wide views across the valley. It is a good half-day hike and the most popular first walk for our guests. A park entry fee is paid at the gate.

3. Baghdwar — source of the Bagmati River

Higher up the hill, Baghdwar is revered as the source of the Bagmati, Kathmandu's sacred river, where water flows from a stone tiger's mouth. Combine it with Nagi Gompa for a full day in the forest.

4. Shivapuri Peak

At around 2,732 m, Shivapuri Peak is the highest point on the valley rim. It is a long, steep day hike; on clear mornings the reward is a view of the Himalaya to the north and the whole valley below. Longer ridge walks continue east along the hills — ask us about routes and timings.

5. Meditation and monasteries

Northern Kathmandu is one of Nepal's centres for meditation. Nepal's main Vipassana centre, Dharmashringa, is in the hills above Budhanilkantha, and Kopan Monastery, known for its introductory courses in Buddhism, is a short drive away above Boudhanath.

6. Watch the valley from the rooftop

Not every activity needs a plan. From our rooftop the forest catches the first light in the morning, and after dark the lights of Kathmandu spread out below — bring a cup of tea and stay for a while.

7. Eat local

Family-run eateries around Budhanilkantha serve dal bhat, momo and Newari snacks at local prices, and there are cafés and international options too. Ask the family for their favourites.

8. Easy trips from Budhanilkantha

  • Boudhanath Stupa — about 30–40 minutes by car.
  • Pashupatinath Temple — about 35–45 minutes.
  • Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple) — about 30 minutes.
  • Thamel and the old bazaars of Asan and Indra Chowk — 25–35 minutes by taxi.
  • Patan and Bhaktapur — a full day, best with a guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Budhanilkantha worth visiting?

Yes — the Sleeping Vishnu is one of the Kathmandu Valley's most remarkable sights, and the Shivapuri forest trails make it the best base in the valley for hiking.

How far is Budhanilkantha from Thamel?

About 8–10 km, usually 25–35 minutes by taxi depending on traffic.

Do I need a guide to hike in Shivapuri National Park?

Popular trails such as the walk to Nagi Gompa are straightforward, but we recommend walking with a companion or a local guide and telling someone your route. Pay the park entry fee at the gate.
