Homestay in Kathmandu: What to Expect and How to Choose
Thinking of a homestay instead of a hotel in Kathmandu? What's usually included, how homestays differ from hotels and guesthouses, which neighbourhood to choose, and a few house customs.

A homestay means staying in a family's home rather than a hotel. In Kathmandu that can range from a spare room in a family house to a small, family-run guesthouse with private bathrooms. Here is what to expect, how to choose, and how we do things at Sacred Trails in Budhanilkantha.
Homestay, guesthouse or hotel?
| Homestay | Guesthouse | Hotel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | A local family, usually living on site | A small business, often family-owned | A company with staff |
| Feel | Personal, home-like, local life | Simple and sociable | Standardised and private |
| Food | Often home-cooked breakfast or meals | Café or restaurant | Restaurant, room service |
| Local advice | From hosts who live there | From reception staff | From the concierge or tour desk |
| Price | Usually good value | Budget | Mid-range to luxury |
Standards vary a lot between homestays, so check the essentials before you book: private or shared bathroom, hot water, Wi-Fi, breakfast, and how far it is from the places you want to visit.
What's usually included
- A private room — some homestays share bathrooms; ours all have private en-suite bathrooms.
- Breakfast, often home-cooked Nepali or continental.
- Wi-Fi in the house (speed varies — ask if you need to work).
- Help from the hosts with taxis, SIM cards, buses, tours and treks.
- Extras such as airport pickup, laundry or dinner, sometimes for a charge.
Which neighbourhood?
Thamel
The traveller district in the city centre: restaurants, trekking shops, bars and agencies on every corner. Convenient, lively and noisy at night.
Boudhanath
The Tibetan Buddhist neighbourhood around the great stupa, with monasteries and a calm, devotional atmosphere, especially at dawn and dusk.
Patan (Lalitpur)
A separate historic city south of the Bagmati River, known for Newar architecture, metal-crafts workshops and its Durbar Square. Quieter than Thamel, with good cafés.
Budhanilkantha
The green northern edge of the valley, at the foot of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, with forest trails, the famous Sleeping Vishnu temple and noticeably quieter nights. It is about 12 km from the airport and 25–35 minutes by taxi from Thamel — a good choice if you value rest, nature or a long stay over nightlife on your doorstep.
House customs
- Take your shoes off at the door of a home or shrine room if you see shoes left outside.
- A smile and "Namaste" with palms together is the usual greeting.
- Dress modestly when visiting temples and in family areas.
- Ask before photographing people, especially at religious sites.
- Tell your hosts in advance if you'll be back late or have dietary needs.
