Your Bardia adventure begins at Sacred Trails Homestay in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu. Your driver takes you to the airport for a 1-hour domestic flight to Nepalgunj in Nepal's far west. A 2-hour private vehicle transfer through the flat Terai plains brings you to Thakurdwara — the quiet village at the edge of Bardia National Park. You check in at your Tharu jungle lodge, family-run and built in the traditional local style. In the afternoon, your naturalist guide leads an orientation walk through the village, briefing you on wildlife behaviour, jungle safety and what to expect inside the park. As evening falls, a Tharu cultural programme begins — traditional stick dance, drumming and a dinner of authentic local Tharu cuisine. No safari today. Bardia rewards patience — tonight is about learning the jungle's rhythms before you enter it.

A 6:00 AM full-day jeep safari takes you into Bardia's core zone and Babai Valley — home to the highest Bengal tiger density in Nepal and one of the last genuinely wild elephant herds in the country. Unlike Chitwan, these elephants are not domesticated — encounters are real, unpredictable and unforgettable. Return to the lodge for a hot breakfast, followed by a mandatory 2-hour midday rest while the jungle quiets in the heat. The afternoon brings a bird watching session along the grassland-forest edge — Bardia is home to 407 species including 11 globally threatened birds. The day closes with a visit to a traditional Tharu village, where mud-and-thatch homes are decorated with hand-painted animal motifs.

This is the day that makes Bardia unlike anywhere else in Nepal. A morning boat safari on the Karnali River brings you into the territory of the endangered Gangetic river dolphin — one of the world's rarest freshwater mammals, found in only a handful of rivers globally, and Bardia is one of their last strongholds. Watch critically endangered gharial crocodiles basking on the sandbanks and scan the riverbank for tigers, wild elephants and deer drinking at the water's edge in the early morning light. In the afternoon, an optional gentle raft down the Karnali River through pristine jungle offers a different perspective on the landscape. The evening closes watching the Karnali River catch the last light from the open grasslands.

An early morning guided tiger tracking walk takes you through sal forests, open savannas and riverine grasslands — three distinct habitat types in a single walk. Your naturalist teaches you to read the jungle: pug marks, scratch trees, scat and kill sites, and how a deer alarm call tells you a tiger is within 200 metres. The afternoon is completely free — rest at the lodge, photograph the garden birds, or join an optional sunset jeep run along the park boundary. The day closes with a farewell Tharu feast prepared from the lodge's own garden. Three full days in Bardia's wilderness earn a gentle, unhurried final evening.

An optional 5:30 AM final bird walk along the park boundary — the most peaceful hour of the entire stay. Breakfast and check out at leisure. A 2-hour private vehicle transfer to Nepalgunj Airport is followed by a 1-hour domestic flight back to Kathmandu. Your Sacred Trails driver meets you on arrival — you return to the homestay by midday with the full afternoon free.
