National park
Bardia National Park, in far-western Nepal, covers about 968 km² along the Karnali River — the largest national park in Nepal's Terai lowlands. It became a national park in 1988 after years as a royal hunting reserve.
Far fewer visitors make it here than to Chitwan, which is exactly the appeal: guided walks, jeep safaris and river trips through sal forest and grassland with a real sense of wilderness.
Guided walks through forest and riverine grassland with experienced naturalists.
Deep into the core zone and the Babai Valley, with long stops at waterholes.
Boat trips for gharials, mugger crocodiles and the rare Gangetic river dolphin.
Lodges near the park gate at Thakurdwara are surrounded by traditional Tharu villages.
October to March is the most comfortable; February to May often gives the best wildlife visibility, though April and May are very hot. The monsoon brings heavy rain and flooding.
