FAQ
Frequently asked questions
The homestay
Where is Sacred Trails Kathmandu Homestay?
We are at Tushal Height in Budhanilkantha, a calm, green residential area on the northern edge of Kathmandu at the foot of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Cafés, restaurants, temples and meditation centres are nearby, and central Kathmandu is an easy ride away.
What type of accommodation do you offer?
Six private guest rooms — Deluxe King and Deluxe Twin rooms with en-suite bathrooms — and one fully equipped 2-bedroom family apartment with a kitchen.
Is breakfast included?
Yes, a fresh home-cooked breakfast is included with our Deluxe King and Twin rooms, and can be arranged on request for the family apartment. Vegetarian options are always available, and we can cater for other dietary needs with advance notice.
Do you have free Wi-Fi?
Yes. Fast, unlimited Wi-Fi covers every room and the shared areas, including the lobby and the rooftop — it works well for remote work.
Is it suitable for long stays?
Yes. We regularly host digital nomads, meditation students, volunteers and families for weeks or months, and offer long-term and monthly rates. Message us with your dates for a quote.
Is the area safe and quiet?
Yes. The neighbourhood is residential, calm and surrounded by greenery and forest views, and the property has 24/7 CCTV on common areas.
How is a homestay different from a hotel?
You get hotel-standard cleanliness and private bathrooms, plus a family welcome: home-cooked food, personal travel advice and hosts who actually know the trails, temples and restaurants nearby.
Is the homestay good for families with children?
Yes. Our 2-bedroom family apartment gives parents and children separate bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen, and smaller families are comfortable in a King or Twin room. Budhanilkantha Temple, forest walks and the rooftop are all close at hand.
What are your reception hours?
Reception is staffed 08:00–20:00 (Nepal time), and we answer WhatsApp messages 7 days a week.

Transport & getting here
How far is the homestay from Tribhuvan International Airport?
About 12 km. The drive usually takes 30–40 minutes, depending on Kathmandu traffic.
Do you offer airport pickup and drop-off?
Yes — airport pickup and drop-off can be arranged on request. Send us your flight details and we'll meet you at arrivals.
How do I get to Thamel?
Thamel is about 8–10 km away, roughly 25–35 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing app. We are happy to arrange a taxi.
Is public transport easy to use?
Yes. The nearest bus stop is about a 10-minute walk away, with regular buses and minibuses into the city. Taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available.
Can you help arrange tours and transport?
Yes. We arrange taxis, private cars, bus tickets, city tours, hikes and multi-day treks and tours, tailored to your interests.
My taxi driver can't find you — what should I do?
Share your live location with us on WhatsApp and we'll guide your driver the last few hundred metres.
How do I get from Kathmandu to Pokhara?
By tourist bus (usually 6–8 hours), by a 25–30 minute flight, or by private car. We can help book tickets or a car.
Arriving in Nepal
Can I get a visa on arrival in Nepal?
Most nationalities can. As published in October 2026, a multiple-entry tourist visa on arrival costs USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days or USD 125 for 90 days. Check the Department of Immigration website for current fees and bring the fee in US dollars cash.
Can I extend my tourist visa during a long stay?
Yes, at the immigration offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara, up to a maximum of 150 days in a calendar year. We can help with directions to the office.
Can I get cash and a SIM card at the airport?
Yes. ATMs and money exchange counters are available at the airport, and you can buy a local SIM card with data — handy for maps and WhatsApp.
When is the best time to visit Nepal?
October and November usually bring the clearest mountain views, with March to May the second-best window. Kathmandu and cultural tours work year-round, but expect rain and cloud during the summer monsoon.
Treks & tours
Which treks do you organise?
Our main treks are Everest Base Camp (14 days, from $1,500), Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill (12 days, from $1,200) and the Poon Hill trek (6 days, from $700). Private departures and custom itineraries can be arranged.
Which trek is best for beginners?
Poon Hill. Walking days are short and the highest point is only 3,210 m, so it also suits children aged around eight and older with basic fitness.
Are trekking permits included?
Yes. All permits for your route are included in our trek packages. We collect your passport details before arrival and arrange everything.
Do I need a guide to trek in Nepal?
In national parks and conservation areas, yes — since April 2023 foreign trekkers there must be accompanied by a licensed guide arranged through a registered agency. All our treks include one.
Can I leave luggage at the homestay while I trek?
Yes. Leave your spare luggage with us before your trek or retreat and collect it when you come back.
Can I book my stay and trek together?
Yes. With our Stay + Trek combined booking we bundle your homestay nights before and after, permits, guide and airport transfer into one price — usually better value than booking separately.
What tours do you offer besides trekking?
Kathmandu Valley heritage tours, Chitwan and Bardia wildlife safaris, a Lumbini pilgrimage, a Pokhara escape, and longer journeys such as the Sacred Triangle (Kathmandu, Chitwan and Lumbini) and the Complete Nepal Journey.
Will I see a tiger on safari?
Sightings can never be promised. Rhinos are seen on most Chitwan safaris, but tigers are elusive in both Chitwan and Bardia.
Food & dining nearby
Are there restaurants and cafés nearby?
Yes. Cafés, local Nepali restaurants, fast food and international options are within walking distance or a short ride.
Can I find vegetarian or vegan food?
Yes. Many nearby restaurants serve vegetarian and vegan dishes, and breakfast at the homestay always has vegetarian options.
Is food delivery available?
Yes. Popular delivery apps operate in the area and deliver to the homestay.
What is served for breakfast?
A fresh Nepali or continental breakfast cooked by the family each morning. We can adapt it for allergies, children or other diets with notice.
Temples, stupas & meditation
Is the homestay close to temples and stupas?
Yes. Budhanilkantha Temple, with its famous reclining Vishnu, is a short walk away, and several Buddhist monasteries are nearby. Boudhanath, Swayambhunath and Pashupatinath are 30–45 minutes by car.
Is it a good base for meditation retreats?
Yes. Guests often stay with us before and after Vipassana courses, Buddhist meditation programmes and visits to ISKCON (Hare Krishna) centres in the area.
Can you help plan visits to sacred sites?
Of course. We can plan a day around Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and other sacred sites, with a guide or a driver.
Can you store my luggage while I'm on a retreat?
Yes. Tell us your course dates and we can arrange transport to and from your centre, keep your luggage while you're away, and offer long-stay rates if you stay on afterwards.

Still have a question?
