Lumbini Pilgrimage — Birthplace of the Buddha

Your Lumbini pilgrimage begins at Sacred Trails Homestay in Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu. Your driver takes you to Tribhuvan International Airport for a 25-minute domestic flight to Bhairahawa, the nearest airport to Lumbini. A 20-minute transfer brings you directly to the Lumbini Sacred Garden — the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama and one of the most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Asia. The afternoon moves slowly and deliberately. You visit Maya Devi Temple, built over the precise spot where the Buddha was born in 623 BC, with 3rd-century BC ruins visible beneath the temple floor. You see the Ashoka Pillar, a stone inscription placed by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC to mark the birthplace. A walk to Puskarini Sacred Pond — where Queen Maya Devi bathed before giving birth — and an evening meditation walk through the Bodhi Tree garden and Eternal Flame close the day. Lumbini has no vehicles inside the sacred zone. From the first hour, it asks you to slow down.

The morning is spent in the International Monastic Zone — a remarkable collection of temples, pagodas and monasteries built by Buddhist nations from across the world, including China, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Thailand, Germany, France and more than 15 other countries. Visit the World Peace Pagoda, a Japanese stupa on a hilltop with sweeping views over the entire Lumbini Sacred Zone. In the afternoon, travel 27 km by vehicle to Tilaurakot — the ruins of the ancient Shakya kingdom palace where young Siddhartha Gautama lived his first 29 years before renouncing the world. Close the visit at Kapilavastu Archaeological Museum, where artefacts and ancient coins from the Buddha's royal lineage are on display.

Wake before sunrise for an optional 6:00 AM walk through the Lumbini Sacred Garden — the most peaceful and most beautiful hour in all of Lumbini. Breakfast at the hotel, then check out at leisure. Transfer to Bhairahawa Airport for the 25-minute domestic flight back to Kathmandu.
