Overview

Lumbini, in Nepal's western Terai, is revered as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This three-day pilgrimage flies you from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa, about 20 minutes from the Sacred Garden.

You visit the Maya Devi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar and the Puskarini sacred pond, walk in meditation through the Bodhi tree garden, explore the temples built by Buddhist nations in the International Monastic Zone, and travel to the ruins of Tilaurakot, the ancient Shakya capital. Vehicles are not allowed inside the sacred zone, which keeps it remarkably peaceful.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1: Fly to Lumbini
Flight from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa (about 25 minutes) and transfer to Lumbini. Visit the Maya Devi Temple, the Ashoka Pillar and the Puskarini pond, then an evening meditation walk past the Bodhi tree and the Eternal Peace Flame.
Day 2: Monastic Zone and Tilaurakot
Explore temples and monasteries built by Buddhist communities from around the world, visit the World Peace Pagoda, then drive about 27 km to Tilaurakot and the Kapilavastu Archaeological Museum.
Day 3: Dawn in the Sacred Garden, return to Kathmandu
An optional early walk in the Sacred Garden, breakfast and check-out, then the flight back to Kathmandu and transfer to the homestay or the international airport.
