Kathmandu to Lumbini: How to Reach the Buddha's Birthplace
Flying to Bhairahawa or taking the long road south: how to travel from Kathmandu to Lumbini, how long each option takes, and how to fit Lumbini into a Nepal itinerary.

Lumbini, where the Buddha was born, is in Nepal's southern Terai close to the Indian border. It is a long way from Kathmandu by road, which is why most visitors fly. Here is how the options compare.
| Option | Typical time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Flight to Bhairahawa | About 25–35 minutes, then roughly 20 km by road to Lumbini | Fastest; several flights a day |
| Bus | 8–10 hours or more | Usually ends in Bhairahawa, not Lumbini — a further transfer is needed |
| Private car | 8–9 hours, or about 3 hours from Chitwan | Best as part of a Chitwan + Lumbini route |
Flying to Bhairahawa
Flights from Kathmandu land at Gautam Buddha International Airport, usually just called Bhairahawa airport. From there Lumbini is about 20–22 km — roughly 30 minutes to an hour by car depending on traffic. On a clear morning the flight gives views of the Himalaya to the north. Because flights are quick, a two- or three-night trip to Lumbini is easy to fit into a week in Nepal.
By road
Buses run from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa, typically taking 8–10 hours or more. It is the cheapest option but a very long day, and you still need a local bus or taxi from Bhairahawa to Lumbini. We only suggest it if you are on a tight budget or travelling overland to India.
Combine Lumbini with Chitwan
Chitwan and Lumbini are about 3 hours apart by road, so they pair naturally: drive from Kathmandu to Chitwan for a safari, continue to Lumbini, then fly back to Kathmandu from Bhairahawa. That route avoids doing the long highway twice and is exactly how our Sacred Triangle tour works.
When to go
- October to March is the most pleasant time; days are warm and evenings cool.
- December and January mornings can be foggy, which sometimes delays flights.
- April to June is very hot on the plains, and the monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain.
- Buddha Jayanti, the Buddha's birthday in spring, is a special but busy time to visit.
