Hiking from Budhanilkantha: Shivapuri National Park Trails
Shivapuri Peak, Nagi Gompa and Baghdwar — the best day hikes that start practically at our door, with tips on fees, timing and what to bring.

Kathmandu is not only temples and traffic. Its northern rim is a wall of forest — Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park — and Budhanilkantha sits right at its foot. From Sacred Trails you can walk into the park in the morning and be back for a hot shower and dinner in the evening.
About Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park
The park protects the forested hills that supply much of the valley's water. Its oak, rhododendron and pine forests are home to a great variety of birds, butterflies and monkeys, and on clear days the higher viewpoints look north to the Himalaya and south over the whole valley. There are routes for every level, from short forest walks to a full-day summit hike.
Popular hikes from Budhanilkantha
Nagi Gompa
A steady climb through forest to a Buddhist nunnery and retreat centre with wide views over the valley. A good half-day hike and the most popular first walk for our guests.
Baghdwar
Baghdwar is revered as the source of the sacred Bagmati River, where water emerges from a stone tiger's mouth. It can be combined with Nagi Gompa for a longer day.
Shivapuri Peak
At about 2,732 m, Shivapuri Peak is the highest point on the valley rim and a full-day hike with a lot of climbing. The reward on a clear day is a view of the Himalayan range to the north.
Short forest walks
If you are acclimatising before a trek, recovering after one, or walking with children, gentle trails on the lower slopes give you birdsong and shade without a big climb.
Practical tips
- An entry fee is charged at the park gate — carry cash and your passport.
- Start early: mornings are clearer and cooler, and afternoon cloud often hides the views.
- Carry water, snacks and a warm layer; there are few facilities inside the park.
- Walk with a companion or a local guide, and let us know your route before you go.
- In the monsoon (June–September) trails are slippery and leeches are common — wear long socks.
Who these hikes suit
Beginners and families enjoy the short forest walks. Experienced walkers take on Shivapuri Peak or combine Nagi Gompa and Baghdwar. Wellness travellers pair a morning hike with yoga or meditation on our rooftop. And trekkers heading to Everest or Annapurna use these hills as a gentle warm-up.
