Chandragiri is the hill on the south-western rim of the Kathmandu Valley. A modern cable car lifts you from Thankot, on the valley floor, to the summit at about 2,500 m in around ten minutes. On a clear day the view stretches across the whole valley to a long line of Himalayan peaks.
What's at the top
- Bhaleshwor Mahadev, a Shiva temple that draws pilgrims as well as tourists.
- Viewing decks looking north to the Himalaya — on a clear morning you can see from the Annapurnas towards Langtang and beyond.
- Walking paths, cafés and a children's play area.
- A view back across the valley — try to spot Shivapuri, the forested hill above our homestay, on the far side.
Tickets and status
Ticket prices are set separately for Nepali, SAARC and other foreign visitors. Commonly quoted fares for foreigners are around USD 22–23 for a return ride, but prices change, so check with Chandragiri Hills before you go. The lower station was damaged in the September 2025 protests; the cable car reopened in November 2025 after repairs and safety checks.
When to go
- October to December has the clearest mountain views.
- Go early: clouds and haze usually build by late morning.
- Saturdays and public holidays are busy with local families — weekdays are calmer.
- It is noticeably colder at the top than in the city; take a warm layer.
Getting there from Sacred Trails
Chandragiri is on the opposite side of the valley from Budhanilkantha, so allow around an hour or more each way by car, depending on traffic. A private car is the easiest option — the driver waits while you ride up, and you can add Swayambhunath or Kathmandu Durbar Square on the way back to make a full day.
