Budget Stays near Thamel: Is a Homestay Better Value?

An honest look at what a budget room in Kathmandu really costs — and when a family homestay a short ride from Thamel works out cheaper than staying in the middle of it.

Deluxe Twin Room with two single beds, brick feature wall and wooden floor

Thamel has rooms at every price, so why stay 25–35 minutes away? For many travellers — students, volunteers, remote workers and anyone staying more than a few days — the numbers and the sleep quality both come out ahead. Here is how to compare honestly.

What you get for the price

Our direct rates (per room, per night)
RoomRateBreakfast
Deluxe King Room$35Included
Deluxe Twin Room$35Included
2-Bedroom Family Apartment with Kitchen$70On request

Two people sharing a Deluxe room pay about $17.50 each, with a private en-suite bathroom, hot water around the clock, Wi-Fi and a home-cooked breakfast — so one meal a day is already covered. There are no booking fees when you book direct.

Ways to pay less

  • Stay 3 nights or more for 5% off, or 7 nights or more for 6% off.
  • Book 14 days ahead for 5% off, or 30 days ahead for 6% off.
  • Ask for weekly and monthly rates for long stays.
  • Groups booking several rooms can ask for a group quote.
  • Self-cater in the family apartment's kitchen.

The trade-off: getting to Thamel

Thamel is 8–10 km away, about 25–35 minutes by taxi. If you plan to be out in Thamel every night, factor in the taxi fares — ride-hailing apps are usually the cheapest option, and the nearest bus stop is a 10-minute walk. If you mostly want quiet evenings, good sleep and day trips, the savings and the calm win easily.

Good for students and long stays

We regularly host students, language learners, volunteers and digital nomads. Fast Wi-Fi, a desk in every room, laundry service and a family who can help with buses, SIM cards and local food make settling in much easier.
