Solo in Kathmandu: A Rooftop View and a Family to Come Home To
Travelling alone in Nepal? Why a family homestay with a rooftop over the valley makes a reassuring, sociable base — plus safety tips and solo-friendly trips.

Kathmandu is a welcoming city for solo travellers, but it can also be overwhelming on the first day. Staying with a family means there is always someone to ask — which bus to take, what a fair taxi fare is, whether the trail is muddy — and a quiet room to retreat to.
The rooftop
Our rooftop terrace is the heart of the house. In the early morning, the forested ridge of Shivapuri catches the first light; at sunset the whole Kathmandu Valley turns gold; and after dark the city lights spread out below like a carpet. It is a good place for yoga, journaling, a cup of tea, or simply comparing trekking plans with other guests.
Solo-friendly practicalities
- Private rooms with en-suite bathrooms — no shared dorms.
- Free high-speed Wi-Fi in every room and on the rooftop, so you can keep in touch with home.
- 24/7 CCTV on common areas and hosts living on site.
- A study table in every room if you need to work or plan.
- Laundry service for a small charge.
Safety tips for solo travellers
- Use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and agree the fare before you get in a metered-less taxi.
- Share your trekking plans with someone and never trek remote routes completely alone — Nepal's rules now require foreign trekkers to hire a licensed guide on many routes.
- Keep a copy of your passport and insurance details on your phone.
- Ask us about any area or route — we are happy to help you plan.
Trips that work well solo
You don't need a group to trek or tour with us. Our treks run from two people upwards, and we can often match solo travellers with others on similar dates — just ask. The Poon Hill Trek is a great first trek; the Kathmandu City Tour is a relaxed way to see the valley's UNESCO sites with a guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Sacred Trails safe for solo travellers?
Yes — it is a family home in a calm residential area, with hosts on site and CCTV on common areas. Many of our guests travel alone.
Can I see the mountains from the rooftop?
The rooftop looks over the Kathmandu Valley and the forested Shivapuri hills. On very clear days, especially after rain, distant peaks can sometimes be seen.
Can I join a trek on my own?
Yes. Tell us your dates and we will either run a private trek for you or try to match you with other travellers.
