About Boudhanath

Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world and part of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its huge white dome and golden spire, painted with the watchful eyes of the Buddha, are surrounded by monasteries, prayer-wheel alleys and rooftop cafés.

It is the centre of Tibetan Buddhist life in Nepal. Pilgrims walk the kora — the circuit around the stupa — clockwise from dawn until after dark, spinning prayer wheels and chanting.

Things to do in Boudhanath

  • Walk the kora

Join the pilgrims circling the stupa clockwise — the atmosphere is best at dawn and dusk.

  • Monasteries

Several gompas around the square welcome respectful visitors to watch prayers.

  • Rooftop views

Cafés around the square look straight across the dome.

  • Butter lamps

Lamp houses where pilgrims light butter lamps as offerings.

Getting to Boudhanath

  • About 30–40 minutes by car or taxi from Budhanilkantha.
  • Included on Day 2 of our Kathmandu City Tour, with a guide who explains its symbolism.

Best time to visit

Any time of year. Early morning and the hour around sunset are the most atmospheric; Tibetan New Year (Losar) brings special celebrations.

Local tips

  • Always walk clockwise around the stupa and prayer wheels.
  • Ask before photographing monks or people at prayer.
  • Kopan Monastery, known for its meditation courses, is a short drive away.
