If you want a taste of trekking without flying to the mountains, the walk from Dhulikhel to Namobuddha is one of the best days out near Kathmandu. It follows village trails through terraced fields and pine forest to a hilltop stupa and monastery, with the Himalaya on the horizon.

Namobuddha

Namobuddha is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal. Legend tells of a prince — an earlier life of the Buddha — who offered his own body to a starving tigress and her cubs on this hill. A stupa marks the spot, and above it stands the large Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, where young monks study and chant. Visitors are welcome to look around quietly.

The route

Dhulikhel–Namobuddha at a glance
StartDhulikhel, about 30 km east of Kathmandu
Walking timeAbout 3–4 hours one way
DistanceRoughly 10–12 km, depending on the trail
DifficultyEasy to moderate, with some steady climbs
ReturnBy car from Namobuddha, or continue on foot to Panauti

The trail passes small Tamang and Newar villages, rice and mustard fields, and patches of forest. Paths are not always signed, so a local guide or good offline map helps. Many walkers continue downhill from Namobuddha to Panauti, a small Newar town with old temples, before driving back.

When to go

  • October to April is best, with clear views and dry trails.
  • Start early for the clearest mountain views.
  • In the monsoon the trail is muddy and leeches are common.

What to bring

  • Walking shoes with grip, a sun hat and sunscreen.
  • Water and snacks — small tea shops exist but are spread out.
  • A light layer for the hilltops and the monastery.
  • Modest clothing for the monastery (shoulders and knees covered).

Getting there from Sacred Trails

Dhulikhel is on the eastern edge of the valley, roughly 1.5 hours by car from Budhanilkantha depending on traffic. The easiest plan is a private car that drops you in Dhulikhel and collects you at Namobuddha or Panauti. Ask us and we'll arrange the car, a packed lunch and, if you like, a local guide.
