Kathmandu's busiest months for visitors are also its most festive. Good weather brings trekkers in autumn and spring, and the biggest Hindu festivals fall in autumn too. With only six rooms and one apartment, we fill up early in these months — book ahead if your dates are fixed.

The busiest times

When to book early
WhenWhy
October–NovemberPeak trekking season with clear skies; Dashain and Tihar usually fall in this period
March–AprilSpring trekking season, rhododendrons in bloom
Late December–early JanuaryHoliday travel from abroad

Festival dates follow the lunar calendar and move each year, so ask us about the dates for your trip.

The festivals

Dashain

Nepal's biggest festival, lasting about two weeks. Families gather, elders give blessings with tika, and kites fill the sky. Many offices and some shops close and buses out of the city are packed, so book transport early.

Tihar

The festival of lights, a few weeks after Dashain. Houses glow with oil lamps and strings of lights, doorways are hung with marigold garlands, and dogs, crows and cows are honoured on their own days. Celebrating Tihar with a family is a highlight for many of our guests.

Holi

The festival of colours in spring. Expect coloured powder and water in the streets — wear clothes you don't mind ruining.

Booking tips

  • Book your room and domestic flights several weeks ahead for October–November.
  • Leave a buffer day after a trek in case flights back to Kathmandu are delayed.
  • Our free cancellation up to 24 hours before arrival keeps your plans flexible.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a good idea to visit Kathmandu during Dashain or Tihar?

Yes, if you book ahead. The atmosphere is special, especially at Tihar, though some offices close and transport is busy.

How early should I book Sacred Trails for October?

Several weeks ahead is sensible, as we have only six rooms and one apartment. Booking 14+ days ahead also earns an early-bird discount.
