Where to Stay in Kathmandu (2026): Why Budhanilkantha Is the Best Base
Quiet nights, forest air and every sight within reach: why our guests choose Budhanilkantha over the city centre, and the 10 best places to visit from Sacred Trails.

Where you sleep in Kathmandu decides how much traffic you sit in, how noisy your nights are and how you feel at the start of each day. We're the Giri family, and our homestay is in Budhanilkantha, on the green northern edge of the valley. Here's why we think it's the best base for your trip — and the ten places our guests love visiting from here.
What makes a good Kathmandu base
- Quiet nights — the city centre can be loud until late.
- Clean air and green space to come back to after a day in traffic.
- Easy access to the airport and the main sights.
- Hosts who can arrange drivers, guides, treks and tours.
- Somewhere safe to leave luggage while you trek.

The 10 best places to visit from Sacred Trails
1. Budhanilkantha Temple (the Sleeping Vishnu)
A short walk from our door: the great reclining Vishnu lying in a sacred pool, one of the valley's most important Hindu sites.
2. Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park
Forest trails start minutes from the homestay — to Nagi Gompa nunnery, Baghdwar and the summit for those with a full day.
3. Boudhanath Stupa
The great white stupa and its monasteries. Go at dusk when pilgrims walk the kora by butter-lamp light.
4. Pashupatinath Temple
Nepal's holiest Hindu temple on the banks of the Bagmati River, best visited with a guide.
5. Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple)
A hilltop stupa with sweeping views over the city — climb the eastern stairway for the full experience.
6. Kathmandu Durbar Square
The old royal palace square, with temples, courtyards and the home of the Kumari, the living goddess.
7. Patan
A separate historic city with its own Durbar Square, metal-craft workshops and the excellent Patan Museum.
8. Bhaktapur
The best-preserved medieval town in the valley: pottery squares, pagodas and the famous juju dhau yoghurt.
9. Thamel
Kathmandu's traveller district for gear shopping, souvenirs and an evening out — then a taxi home to quiet.
10. Nagarkot sunrise
A hill village on the valley's eastern rim, about 30 km from Kathmandu, for a Himalayan sunrise on clear mornings. We can arrange an early drive.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Kathmandu?
If you value quiet nights and fresh air, Budhanilkantha on the forest edge of Shivapuri is an excellent base. Sacred Trails is a family homestay there, about 12 km from the airport and 25–35 minutes by taxi from Thamel.
Where should I stay in Kathmandu before a trek?
Somewhere you can sleep well, store luggage and get an early transfer. At Sacred Trails we store your bags while you trek and welcome you back for a hot shower and rest.
Is Budhanilkantha too far from the sights?
No. Thamel, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath are reachable by taxi or ride-hailing car, and we arrange drivers and guides for full-day sightseeing.
