Nepalis dress modestly, and visitors who do the same are welcomed warmly — especially at temples. Here's a simple guide.

Everyday in Kathmandu

  • Light, breathable clothes in layers — mornings and evenings are cooler than afternoons.
  • Trousers, long skirts or knee-length shorts.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: lanes are uneven and often dusty.
  • A light rain jacket from June to September.
  • A warm jacket from November to February.

At temples and stupas

  • Cover shoulders and knees.
  • Wear shoes that are easy to take off.
  • Avoid leather items inside some Hindu temples.
  • A light scarf is useful for covering up when needed.

What to leave at home

  • Very short shorts and revealing tops.
  • Expensive jewellery.
  • Too many clothes — laundry is easy and cheap.
