Kathmandu is a friendly city and most visitors never have a problem. Like any capital, it has its own risks — and most of them are about traffic and health rather than crime. Here's what we tell our guests. Always check your own government's latest travel advice before you go.

Everyday safety

  • Traffic is the biggest daily risk. Cross roads carefully and watch for motorbikes.
  • Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket in crowded places, at festivals and on buses.
  • Common scams are small: inflated taxi fares and unofficial guides at heritage sites. Agree prices first and use licensed guides.
  • Solo travellers, including women, travel widely in Kathmandu. Usual city sense applies after dark.

Protests and strikes

Nepal has occasional demonstrations and strikes, and some have turned violent, including in Kathmandu. Avoid gatherings, follow local news and your hosts' advice, and check your government's travel advisory before and during your trip.

Earthquakes

Nepal is in an active earthquake zone. Know the safe spots in your room, keep a torch and shoes by the bed, and register with your embassy if your government offers it.

Health

  • Drink treated or bottled water and eat freshly cooked food.
  • Air quality can be poor in the dry months, especially in the city centre.
  • Get travel insurance that covers your activities — and helicopter evacuation if you're trekking at altitude.

How we look after guests

  • The Giri family lives on site, so someone is always at home.
  • Common areas have 24/7 CCTV.
  • We meet you at the airport on request, day or night.
  • We use licensed guides and drivers we know personally.
  • We'll tell you honestly if something in town is best avoided on a particular day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kathmandu safe for solo female travellers?

Many women travel solo in Kathmandu without problems. Use usual city precautions after dark and dress modestly at religious sites. At Sacred Trails the family lives on site and can arrange airport pickup.

Is it safe to walk around Kathmandu at night?

Busy tourist areas are generally fine in the evening; traffic is the main hazard. Take a taxi late at night and avoid any gatherings or protests.
